Further Information

Discover the world of potatoes. After work in the field, enjoy a picnic in the countryside and a tasty potato snack and taste the Sauwald vodka. The tour of the modern warehouse, as well as the shopping possibilities of regional products are finally on the program.

We meet in Sankt Aegidi at our farm in Schauern. From there we hike comfortably and not far away (approx. 2 km) to the earth apples field. Equipped with gloves, basket and chopped potatoes and under the guidance of our potato farmers, you will then harvest potatoes like in the past. Take advantage of the expert discussion with the farmer and ask everything you have always wanted to know about the potatoes. At the next field you will see that potatoe is not potatoe. We visit another field with a different variety. Over 10 different varieties grow in our fields. During a leisurely picnic in the countryside next to the potato field, you can taste the potato with a delicious snack including drinks. After this short rest you hike strengthened through the picturesque Sauwald, past fields of earth apples back to our farm. During a tour of our warehouse, you will learn how modern potatoes can be. Pack the rest of the harvest for the journey home and then the tour with a taste of our Sauwald vodka is already coming to an end. Finally, you have the opportunity to buy regional delicacies and memorabilia in our farm shop. You haven't had enough? Let us know, there is still so much to discover with us in the Sauwald.

About the hosts:
Eduard Paminger: "My family and 9 other farming families from and around St. Aegidi cultivate the tasty Sauwald earth apples on about 35 hectares and market them in our modern warehouse. Potatoes have almost always been cultivated in our region, the natural conditions such as weather and ancient rock weathering soil simply fit perfectly for the cultivation of this tuber. The fact that the potatoes from the Sauwald also taste particularly good is well known far beyond the borders of our region. I recognized this in the 1990s and, in an emergency, founded the “Sauwald Erdäpfel“ producer group together with 15 other farmers.

With hardly any experience in the trade and marketing sector, but with a lot of expertise around the cultivation of potatoes, I ventured this journey into the unknown. I can rightly say that a lot of passion, time and tenacity have also contributed to infecting other farmers and their families with my passion. Without this cohesion and communal thinking, the Sauwald potatoe brand would not be where it is today. Since 2007, my son Martin has been running the business, which was hardly conceivable otherwise. Martin was practically the cradle of vegetable farming. Already as a child he cultivated his own vegetables in the field and was allowed to sell his rich harvest of sweet corn, carrots and beans at the farmer's market. The enthusiasm for the potatoes continues to this day and keeps Martin thinking.

In spring 2020, we began the construction of a new warehouse and sorting hall with office and sales premises. We see continuous development as a major task for the Sauwald potatoe brand and for each individual farmer. We have made it our goal to combine quality, environmental protection, trade requirements and customer satisfaction. With foresight, a little creativity and the courage to do something new, we can do it!"

About the region
The Sauwald - a wonderful cultural landscape. The Sauwald plateau: a mosaic of fields and meadows, extensive forests, traditional farming hamlets, undulating landscape,... - simply an experience! The soil in the Sauwald is a primordial rock soil and belongs geologically to the Bohemian Massif. It was formed by the weathering of granite and gneiss and has a very high potassium content. Potassium is largely responsible for the internal and external quality of potatoes.
